Christopher D. Arndt, MD, will assume the position of interim chair for The University of New Mexico Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine, effective September 7, 2020. Arndt takes over leadership of the department from Hugh B. Martin, MD, who recently announced he will be stepping down.
“Dr. Arndt received tremendous support from department faculty and institutional leadership for the role of interim chair,” said Martha Cole McGrew, interim dean of the UNM School of Medicine.
“I have worked with him for many years since his days as one of our medical students through his development as a faculty member and leader, both in the department and in the institution. He cares deeply about our mission and vision and has earned the respect of the people in the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine, the School of Medicine and UNM Health entities.”
The department’s current associate chair, Arndt was the founding director of UNM’s Acute Pain and Regional Anesthesia fellowship. He has served in many leadership roles in the School of Medicine and UNM Health Sciences, vice chair for Quality and Compliance, medical director of the UNM Outpatient Surgery Center and Acute Pain Service director.
Arndt is a double alumnus of UNM who completed both his MD (’02) and residency (’06) at the School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, he served as a U.S. Navy officer.
